Seek you shall find and observe you shall see. It is often in the unlikely places that one finds the greatest of one’s lessons in life, but only if one is in search, patient and willing to observe what one encounter. As usual I am not drawing my conclusions from the labs, libraries, whole ways or even campuses, great or learning not so great schools of, but from everywhere and nowhere encounters of everyday experiences. Spring comes and goes and it has some habitual aficionados that come out of hibernation and fill the public parks and places where spring stages its spectacular natural exhibits and shows. To these places and stages I too had formed a habit of annual attendance and I am a regular spectator. It is often ironic that at what we all see we look at differently and we find different meanings appeals, because what we seek in whatever we encounter is as different as our own selves. As is said one can create what he desires by the devotion of his desire, though I disagree with the word create I would definitely settle for the word one can see. For creation is only once in science as decreed by the law of conservation and only for God for the believers. If I have sounded biting about the bush, it is my intent to make you work somewhat before I let you know the nonsense I am about to say. After all why should you get anything without working and why should I give you my nonsense for nothing. Though I was out as them and us aficionados to celebrate spring and its colorful bloom I had in my mind the plight of so many who are incarcerated in and around the world for speaking up their mind and believing in a cause the felt right. I had worn my amnesty international T shirt that was given me as gratitude for my membership and menial contribution to the cause. As I was strolling along the river basin and basking in the glow of spring red, pink and white flowers, there I see swan couple sharing in spring fervor with the rest us humans. Though I was initially the swans that attracted my attention it was the inanimate wooden object that drifted towards me that gave meaning, a real sense what I was declaring by wearing my T shirt. As it drifted closer to me I looked at my shirt and looked to the floating object a number of times. It had its head severed its right arm and right leg cut off. It had its left feet, left arm and the rest of its body intact, I picked up from the water and looked at it and hang it for everyone to look at it and wondered if everybody saw what I saw in it. Every time I look at it reminds me of yet different scene. One time it appeals to as someone whose conscience is free and he does not even feel the pain but who is tormenting his tormentors and I the complacent’s conscience by its mere presence of its mutilated body and at other times it comes to me as a headless tyrannical regimes who are only standing on their left legs and left arms and a veracious body that lack a right arm and leg to balance and keep their equilibrium and are about to tip over with a little push.

For some time now I have been wondering as to why we were often asked to give personal references on job applications. It had appealed to me only may be as a reminder of the past glorious days when people say what they believe in the indeed believed and when they said some thing they know they really did and when they said they know not they indeed not. May be those days are gone but their heritage and the culture they left behind that are manifested in the likes of personal references. I would have no hard time understanding the need for objective references, but personal references are to me a call and an affirmation of nepotism at the least and subjectivism at the most for no full will give a personal reference that will not paint him in the best lights he knows. If that is what is sought, the man himself would by much do a better job than any. As kept wondering about the obsolescence of personal references in the old traditional job applications it bothered me to find the same kind of nepotistic, clan like, country club mentality and practice on the cyber space as practiced by Gmail. Gmail has become the equivalent of the old boy’s country club practice of by referral alone and member only service is no less obsolete as a practice and principle. If you are in the inside your privileges are honored and if you have some one in the inside you are guaranteed a service and a place is by no means a cyber age egalitarianism or democracy, but a drawback to the past time country club mentality.
Ayele Teklemariam The Second Law of Thermodynamics. It is the limitation engendered by an in depth study of individual subject matters and specialized disciplines that shortchange us in understanding the otherwise comprehensive and integrated natural reality. As much as it is imperative that every reality and phenomenon is studied from every angle and perspective, seen a piece at a time and condition it is of paramount importance that at the end or anywhere and everywhere it makes sense that it be looked at in a generalized and comprehensive manner. It has become a common scene and experience to observe a reality by specialty and confine our vision of it to the same spectacle by which we trained to look at and interpret. Such a narrow vision of specialized training has its merits of course as it has its demerits or drawbacks. Since the major intent of this writing is not to indulge in the merits and demerits of specialized studies it would make better sense to jump to the intent of the paper and leave the reader with short introductory note as it is. This writing and its unconventional heading is provoked by the issue of the legal and illegal transnational and transcontinental human movement of the 21st century and the ragging discussion thereof. For the traditional disciplinarian and one who had always the way of looking at physics and social studies or geography, which ever category you want put human social movement and thermodynamics, this surely might sound an unlikely marriage of different species. Nonetheless, there are times when the marriage of the unlikely fits and serves a purpose and a condition better, or perhaps, these relations explains this social dynamics better than any other the writer of this article knows. The relation between social dynamism and physical dynamism and the apparent interrelationship need be seen I feel as one of the major factors and due consideration be given to it in any remedial and diagnostic procedures when and if a need arises to examine it. The Law of Thermodynamic is the Law governing the movement of matter and anything from a high potential to a low potential in whatever form and content that potential is manifested. This is at the crux of the dynamism exhibited in the human movement from trans-family to trans- continents. The law of thermodynamics pre supposes a number of scenarios for the dynamism to continue in the direction and for it to cease or reverse, the polarities of the potentials have to either reverse or equate. Uniformity in distribution of any and everything earthly is un heard of and may never be heard. Asynchrony and un even distribution are the engines and force causing and maintaining the constant dynamism in the human social movement and other animates and in animates. Here it would do a lot of disservice to pass without mentioning the internal and external asynchrony of the Universe and the Earth itself adding to the human social dynamism. In all without exception, the second law of thermodynamics in different forms and manifestations seems and truly, works and governs the restlessness we have come to love and sometimes take with some reservation and at other times with measured resentment. As it is in the law to have energy to be expend and gained. In these dynamisms and movements, it is expected that there be often and always, payments expected and ascertained sometimes disproportionately by some though with the first law not violated. Even the so highly acclaimed economic law of supply and demand which by in large is upheld as the driving and governing factor in the social and economic dynamism, can as well be very well explained by the same two fundamental laws of thermodynamics. The first Law defining and determining the conservation of the totality of whatever it is in a closed system and the second determining the give and take or lose and gain in a material movement. In this material movement, the flow rate determines the pressure by which a flow could be transformed to perform a reasonable work done. A funneling effect and a restriction of a material movement is often useful and even indispensable at times to change the material movement in to a driving force of any engine. It is this semantics in thermodynamics that comes to my mind when I read and hear the current discussion on the revampment of the us immigration laws. there is no disagreement that the us economic engine is driven by this funneled social movement and at the same time it is easy to see and comprehend that this movement has to be restricted to make it drive this ever expanding pie. A movement that is not controlled, directed and compressed will remain amorphous and of no use, and a totally restricted movement will ultimately build up and break any levy and any barrier, Social movements will always continue and the from a low opportunity zones to a high opportunity zones and like any of the other potential buildups will build up and ultimately break any barrier built. It is with expendable energy and other assets that social movements or any material movement happens and as such always has something to spend some thing to gain. These are at the core of every movement, It is by in large transforming and expansive than it is diminutive contrary to popular belief. Here again the 3rd law of thermodynamics could be effectual to explain the qualitative and quantitative content of the material moving and at rest the Enthalpy and Entropy. 3/17/2006 5:34 PM
