It is not a new phenomenon that scientists think of themselves as a different breed of people who are made for science and science made only for them. This mind set didn’t either help the progress of science or the interest of the scientists despite the inherent fallacy in fundamental tenets the belief. As science is important in the human progress and development so are all human endeavors in all known and yet to be known and discovered practices and fields; none more and none less than the other, but of equal importance to the wellbeing of humans and others. It would be of paramount importance for everyone and any one to bear in mind above everything else that no group and field of human study had thus far the monopoly of truth as we have come to know it. Thanks to the uncertainty principle of science itself full certainty of anything is beyond us and them as it is ascertained to us by the principle. The self certainty and self depiction of holding the truth can be nothing more than the arrogance that scientists are known for that by no means serves the promotion of science or the image or the thousands of humble scientists toiling in the labs and fields to make things work and shed the light to those that are under the darkness of ignorance. Talking of ignorance, it comes in all forms and shapes, knowledge of the sciences or a field of science or mastery of any field of knowledge does preempt one from ignorance. the universe and the world we find ourselves in is vast that mastery of what is in it and about it by an individual or group individuals or social groups is beyond comprehension , even humanity collectively have yet scratches of the surface of what is to be known of our universe that the petit rivalry is nothing more than a self defeating pitiful act of mere mortals. The denigrated description of the linguist as a mere word crafter whose abysmal knowledge of science is irrelevant or has nothing to do with science is to say the least an absurdity or a neglect that science itself is a language of the physical world that needs the linguistic expression to be understood and propagated to mean anything. The irony of it all is that the lady who came charging after the word crafter is assigned to the prestigious post she is holding not for doing raw laboratory science rather to craft the words of science and propagate the gospel of the results of the laboratory to the world and she herself could not help craft the phrase word crafting and fall in to the mound she herself dug. There is no denying that science is not word crafting as the distinguished lady Editor in chief of The Scientific American magazine on her May 2010 issue of her editorial had said , but it goes without saying that whatever is accomplished in science could not escape the fact that it has to be recorded and transmitted with some crafty words as the evidenced by the lady editor in chief's crafty words. It would have been more dignified and appropriate for her to dispel whatever falsehood or anomalies the word crafter had reiterated in his/her crafty words than go after the crafts of the word crafter as is expected of professionals and spare us of the undue prop up or belittling of a profession or another. At last it would serve humanity better if we understand that our most common treat is that we are all equally talented, equally important and equally unique that we are individually vital to the integrity the whole.
Moments of social & individual upheaval and responsible self restraint. It would feel and sounds right to expect and it would as well sounds reasonable and within the frame work of human rational for humanity to feel emotionally, psychologically and morally negatively affected by the folly of another human being particularly when it is clearly known that individual or group of individuals had in any way hurt or stood in the way of anybody either by intent or inadvertently. Contrary to these highly held or often expected norm and standard of conduct and ethics, I have come to observe laughter and words of self adulations, sarcasm and vindictiveness all around now like then. It is funny how people could get used to things and lives taking everything as a given and letting often to the test our resilient adaptive skill. Thanks to nature granted adaptive agility and resilience every adversity have become a second nature to us and have learned to live with as a given. It would have been customary to expect a celebration of the harvest collected after a long enough cultivation and waiting for the ripening moment and nurture and prepare for the inevitable next round contrary to the often prevalent observed tomorrow never comes and there was no yesterday attitude . It seems to be saying that tomorrow is only a hope that may never materialize and yesterday is a bad or nice dream that we have awoken from, but today is what we have and is what we should live and die for, a sort of life that lucks both the foundation in yesterday and the hope and prospect in tomorrow, a suspended reality of life have stricken our society and humanity at large. As the Ethiopian saying goes "there are often too many axes for a fallen tree" Though you expect as humanity often irrationally cheers victors real or assumed and boos and woos assumed or real losers one would rather feel that rationality and conscientiousness had been overridden by their nemesis at these historic and euphoric high moments. It comes to me clearly and very loudly that either I am inept to understand my own infantile futility or the developed society's mundane infantile exuberance of what is now despite the reality of the now that is never enough by any measure and the same now that seems never to end yet others fail to see anything beyond its horizons, but a vast unyielding and endless emptiness. It is rather the foresight and resilient efforts not to be bounded by the barricades of the moment and restraints of the time for the then achievers and achieved that are the causes of reasonable and irrational acts and beliefs of the enlightened and not so enlightened contemporary society that should serve as a guide and lesson and take the reasonable responsibility of responsible self restraint at these high and low tides of historic moments of our social and individual lives’ By |
